Credit Monitoring for Microsoft Defender

Microsoft Defender’s credit monitoring actively tracks a subscriber’s credit file for new events such as new accounts, credit inquiries, or negative items. It then alerts them in real time. This helps detect identity theft and fraud early, giving users a chance to act before damage is done.

Role: Product Designer Lead

The Challenge

Credit monitoring is a high-stakes, high-trust experience built on deeply sensitive personal data. It had to help people catch fraud early, handle hard edge cases like minors' data and age-out restrictions, and meet strict regulatory requirements, all without overwhelming someone in a vulnerable moment.

What I did

I designed trust-critical onboarding and detection workflows, mapped the complex edge-case flows, and partnered with legal and cross-functional teams to navigate compliance and sensitive-data constraints. I used qualitative and quantitative data to negotiate scope and keep the experience focused.

The Impact

49% increase in Defender for Individuals sign-ups within the first month of release.
